Summary / Abstract (Note) | India's population growth began to accelerate from the 1920s. Earlier decades were characterised by a regime of high mortality and high fertility under which the population of the country as a whole increased at a very low rate, and the populations of subregions tended to fluctuate, experiencing occasional shrinkages. The acceleration in population growth has led to a steady decline in the land-person ratio. |
