Summary / Abstract (Note)Calcutta has been a rich city in a poor region of a poor country. As it grew wealthier, the country became poorer. All elemental manifestations of such a contradiction abound within the city. Its palaces symbolise unashamed extravagance as the hovels depict the depth of deprivation. To let so much of polarity to persistent is a moral folly.
