Summary / Abstract (Note)This paper reviews and synthesizes case study evidency from Africa and Asia on the institutional and environmental constraints to successful intensification. The first part of this paper describes the population and market demand induced process of agricultural intensification and the second part provides a topology of the conditions under which soil fertility degradation and soil erosion occur.
