Summary / Abstract (Note)The thesis of this paper is that the shape or form of U. S. cities has depended upon the dominant mode of production in each historical period. Four periods are identified, each with a different economic focus, and the way in which the economic structure effected the shape and spacial layout of cities is investigated.
