Summary/Abstract
The British in India perceived and projected Muslims as a unified community. This was so because of their inadquate understanding of the ideological schism in Indian Islam. They were dimly aware of the acute differences, say, between the Deobandis and the Barelwis and only superficially conscious of the Shia-Sunni divide.
