Summary / Abstract (Note)The Govt of Laos estimates that 100,000 ha of primary forest and 300,000 ha of secondary forest are degraded by shifting of cultivation each year. This paper considers lessons from research on shifting cultivation, describes shifting cultivation in Northern Laos and approaches being taken to reduce the area under shifting cultivation in the area, and identifies research that would improve system productivity and sustainability.
