Caste and communal violence have acquired grave proportion in the country. Its dangerous role in dividing the exploited and oppressed masses belonging to various castes, communities, religious groups have not adquately realised. Incorrect or partial explanations lead to wrong strategy and tactics to counteract these dangerous trends.

In this paper, I discuss the changing social relations in rural India, with particular reference to development since the British withdrew after partitioning the country to form the Indian Union and the new state of Pakistan which has now been further fragmented into Pakistan and Bangladesh. My paper restricts the observations to the changing profile of rural society in the Indian Union.
