Summary/Abstract Employing a hedonic pricing model, an empirical study was undertaken to estimate the implicit value of milled rice characteristics using market price as a measure of average consumer preference subject to budge constraints. The results provide useful information in mapping preferences by location, variety type, season and urban-rural differences.

Summary/Abstract The concept of grain quality differs in the various steps of the rice postharvest system. Market quality is mainly determined by physical properties and variety name, whereas cooking and eating quality is determined by physiochemical properties. Grain quality has become an important issue that affects both domestic consumption and possibly international trade in rice.
