Summary/Abstract In a recent article in the AJAE, Ito, Peterson, and Grant (IPG) investigated the nature of demand for rice in 14 Asian countries using a generalized covariance demand model. The results indicated that income elasticities have significantly declined. Moreover, income elasticities are negative in half of the countries studied, leading to the conclusion that rice is becoming an inferior good in Asia.
