During 1982-84, a few highly visible mergers and acquisitions took place in the U.S. electrical household and commercial appliance industry, however, the number of establishments remained nearly the same. The mergers and acquisitions and the decrease in employment were primarily the result of U.S. manufacturers implementing cost cutting measures to remain competitive with foreign manufacturers selling in the U.S. market.
