The 'Indian Renaissance' has been diversely understood. In its narrowest sense it has been to attitudes and ideas of the English-educated or Anglicised people in Bengal in the age of Rammohan Roy or Debendranath Tagore; so it has been called the Bengal Renaissance by distinguished historians. More generally, the Indian Renaissance has been understood as the beginning of India's modernization.
